Microtubule-associated protein 1 light chain 3A (LC3A) is an isoform belonging to the LC3 protein subfamily, encoded by the MAP1LC3A gene. As a crucial component of the cellular autophagy machinery, LC3A is intimately involved in the formation of autophagosomes—double-membraned vesicles that sequester cellular waste for lysosomal degradation. It acts as a structural element and interacts with other autophagy-related proteins to regulate the progression of this essential recycling system, which maintains cellular homeostasis and responds to stress by clearing unnecessary or dysfunctional components.
